The Eagle Of Misty Mountain

19 March 2002

Have you heard the news today?
It was in a quality, I tell you,
Not some dirty old rag,
I can't believe it's true.

You haven't? Well, you will.
They were sent to find it,
In a grand metal kite,
Up high with all the kit.

They came from way afar,
Experts from many lands,
They went to the very peak
And held it in their hands.

Of course, it was dead now,
But well preserved,
A feathered miracle
Not what they deserved.

They refused to stay around
And hunt high and low for proof.
They say they felt profane
And saw a terrible truth.

They took photos and samples
And in a fright left it there
Though they knew it to be treason
They were full of despair.

Look at the headline,
"Two Thousand and Two -
A Space Oddity,
God knows that it's true.

The Eagle has landed, ha!
He was already swooping there,
Up on the peaks of Misty Mountain,
Yes, On the Moon! Up there!

What's It All About ?

This poem is one of several produced as a 'contest' between myself and one of my colleagues, Andy Barham. We challenged each other to produce a poem (within our spare time of that particular working day) based on a title plucked at random from a book. The winner was judged by our wives doing a "blind-reading".

The title of this poem was selected from "A Guide To Tolkien" by David Day.

See Andy's rival poem.

My poem was a tongue in cheek jab at the stories that conspiracy theorists spin out.
